# Discounts and Actions

Note: Discount codes must be created in Shopify Admin in order to function properly with these rules. Also note that Playwright Rules will overwrite whatever values are placed for the discount in Shopify Admin. That said, please be sure you avoid setting discounts to $0 or 0%, as that will cause issues in script execution.

All line item rules for discounts, as well as shipping rules for discounts, have the same set of available discount types which are described here:

• Percentage Discount: Discounts each eligible line item by a percentage. Use a positive whole number. “45” = 45% discount. Can include decimals (“12.5” = 12.5%)

• Fixed Total Discount: Applies a discounted amount across the entire cart. Use a positive whole number. Can include decimals. Has two options:

  • Discount items to $0 until maximum reached - the first eligible item will receive as much discount as possible (up to the price of the item or the entire total fixed discount, whichever is less). Then it will move onto item number two. So a cart with 3 items of $15 each and total discount of $20 might look like:
    • $0 - item 1
    • $5 - item 2
    • $15 - item 3

• Split discount between items: Commonly used option. Applies the total equally across all items. For example, a cart with 3 items of $15 each and total discount of $20 might look like:

  • $8.33 - item 1
  • $8.33 - item 2
  • $8.32 - item 3

• Fixed Per Item Discount: Applies a specified discounted amount to each eligible line item in the cart. Use a positive whole number. Can include decimals.

• Tax Discount: Not frequently used amongst our customers. Applies a discount against the amount of tax due based on cart subtotal. Useful for providing “tax exemption”, although there are other ways in Shopify to do this. Use a positive whole number. Can include decimals.
